Jason Yan

Jason was born in Taiwan and moved to Hong Kong with his family when he was 14 years old. Jason graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Music Studies (majoring in Classical Voice). He has been teaching Classical Singing and Pop Singing in his own studio in Hong Kong since 2016 and continues to build on his 8 years of teaching experience. Besides private one-on-one lessons, Jason was the Vocal Coach for 3 years, for the All Male Voice Choir of “The Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong”, and he was also the Vocal Coach for The Hong Kong Society for the Blind’s Acapella Group: which is the only Acapella group in Hong Kong whose members are mainly blind!

What is different about Jason from other musicians is that Jason only started to formally study music at the age of 18! His unusual musical and singing talent was discovered by his secondary school teacher when he was 16 years old. Jason studied music and vocal technique with this teacher during secondary school and after only a year of vocal training with her, Jason won The Hong Kong Schools Music Festival Vocal Solo Chinese Language and Foreign Language Championship! Every year since then, from 2015 to 2021 he continued to place top of the class. Also, he found success in school singing contests where he was champion of the contest for 4 years in a row!

Jason showed great enthusiasm for music and vocals during his school years. He participated in many different competitions and received numerous awards. He also won the Secondary Joint School Championship for four consecutive years. His outstanding performance shows his talent in vocals and music. Many judges and vocal teachers praised him as “very talented”, “his voice is very contagious”, and “a very beautiful lyric tenor”. He was later invited to be a guest soloist in their concerts and played the main cast in “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” and “Rent”. He also played a main cast in an opera during university studies.

Jason learned to be proficient in many singing styles, including pop, musical theatre, jazz, and R&B, and studied with some famous Berklee‘s teachers. He has his a unique teaching skillset which his students are sure to enjoy. Not only has he taught many local singers as a singing teacher, but some of his students have become professional singers under his guidance and have been signed by local companies. Jason welcomes beginner, intermediate or advanced vocalists to his classroom. He also loves working with singer-songwriters, as he can teach piano to a grade 8 RCM level, and guitar to an intermediate level.
